Duration1 day DescriptionIn this 1-day course we will cover an in-depth view of some important IP areas. The areas covered all play a crucial role in how the Internet is built and functions on a day-to-day basis. We start with examining how Ethernet really works and what impact that has on network switches technology. Next we cover some more recent IP addressing schemes like CIDR and investigate the concept of NAT (Network address translation) in our current mainstream routers (ADSL, cable). Continuing our quest through all these Internet-related technologies, we will tackle a few diagnostic protocols like ICMP and TELNET, but also look at a weak spot called, ARP poisoning. Of course we bring our newly acquired diagnostic skills immediately into action via some interesting packet tracing. In the afternoon, it’s time for some extra serious action. Just as in module 1, we will use this time to construct a small but fully functional intranet/internet with DNS servers, mailservers and webservers. During the gradual build-up of this extended exercise, the underlying technologies, such as DNS, SMTP, POP3 and HTTP are fully explained. Our goal is to be able to send and receive mail, through our own locally-installed mailservers & mailclients, looking at our own webpages from the locally-installed webservers, all of these using the locally-installed DNS servers. In two words : a fully-functional intranet.
